White Doe Inn

Recently, we had the privilege of replacing the asphalt shingle roof on the historic White Doe Inn in Downtown Manteo. Owners, Dave and Tonia Roberts, chose to install Golden Harvest Timberline HDZ shingles by GAF. These high definition shingles added even more dimension to the home that was already abounding in charm and unrivaled craftsmanship.

The White Doe Inn was constructed in 1910 by local builders John Wilson and Joe Dailey for Theodore S. Meekins and his family. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, noted for its architectural and historic significance.

Today, Innkeepers Dave & Tonia Roberts strive to revive that era of traveler comfort and camaraderie. Each guest room and suite is unique. They feature family heirlooms, antiques, and special architectural details. To find out more about this award winning inn or to make a reservation visit https://www.whitedoeinn.com.

We were honored to be selected for this unique project. Here is what owner, Dave Roberts, had to say about his experience with Gallop.

If you’ve ever tried to juggle chainsaws while riding a unicycle, then you’ll have some idea of what it’s like to run a 115-year-old Bed and Breakfast on the National Registry of Historic Places while also replacing its very complicated, very old roof. Enter Gallop Roofing, our unicycle-riding, chainsaw-juggling heroes who turned what could have been a roofing horror story into a success tale that deserves a standing ovation.

The White Doe Inn, our beloved but high-maintenance lady, came with a roof system more complicated than a season finale of a mystery show. Think gables, dormers, and enough historic architectural quirks to keep anyone awake at night. Gallop Roofing took it all in stride, even when removing the old roof revealed a series of unfortunate surprises lurking beneath. But did they panic? Nope. In each case, the crew assessed the situation like a group of seasoned detectives, consulted with their extended team of experts, presented us with options, and delivered solutions that not only fixed the problems but made everything better than before. Seriously, these folks are like the Sherlock Holmes of roofing.

Our property also has gardens that are the pride and joy of the Inn—and they are delicate. We thought, “Surely, these beautiful blooms are goners with all this work.” But Gallop Roofing handled them like they were cradling fine china on a tightrope walk. Not a petal was harmed in the making of this masterpiece. The gardens survived and thrived, looking like they just stepped out of a magazine spread, while the roof above them transformed.

Now, the whole sales process was happening during our Inn purchase and our first month of operation—an absolute circus on a good day. We weren’t the most organized (who knew owning a historic B&B could be so…chaotic?). Enter Mike Reynolds, our ringmaster who made sure all the right things were happening in all the right places. He guided us like a Zen master, ensuring we spent money where it counted, and was always ready to jump on a call, come onsite, or kindly resend emails for the third time (or more—who’s counting?). Mike was our rock, or rather, our shingle—always on top of things!

Now, let’s talk about James Prince, the on-site project manager who was nothing short of a superhero in a hard hat. His superpower? Communication. We’ve never seen someone so committed to keeping us in the loop with updates, insights, and enough detail to write a novel. And he didn’t just give us facts—he gave us guidance, reassurance, and a few good laughs along the way. James is like the James Bond of roofing, but instead of a tux, he’s armed with tools, a keen eye for detail, and a genuine passion for bringing our historic Inn back to life. Whether he was picking up trash, solving a complex problem, or helping us haul in packages (did we mention he’s also got superhero strength?), he did it all with humility, cheerfulness, and a can-do attitude that’s infectious.

James also had a trusty sidekick, Israel, the master craftsman who was often high up on the roof. While we didn’t get to see him much face-to-face, his craftsmanship was felt throughout the project. Israel is like the roofing ninja—quiet, stealthy, and undeniably effective.

And then there’s Brandee Diggs, our go-to guy for future projects. With a background in hospitality, he knows what makes a B&B tick. He’s like the wise old owl of the team, ensuring Gallop only takes on projects where they can absolutely knock it out of the park. When Brandee says they’ve got it, you know you’re in for a real treat.

In the end, Gallop Roofing didn’t just replace our roof—they elevated the White Doe Inn to new heights, literally and figuratively. They’re not just roofers; they’re artists, problem-solvers, and, dare we say, miracle workers. If you’re looking for a roofing company that will treat your property with the care and creativity it deserves, look no further. Gallop Roofing, you’ve earned every star in the sky—thank you for your hard work, dedication, and the fantastic new roof over our heads!
